World Lung Day: Celebrating successes; raising awareness

Ottawa, ON - The Lung Association applauds the leadership of Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) on proclaiming September 25 World Lung Day.  The day is meant to raise awareness about the importance of lung disease on a global scale.

“The bottom line is lung disease is ever-present. Whether it’s the common cold, air pollution or chronic disease that takes your breath away, lungs need our attention,” says Terry Dean, President and CEO, The Lung Association – National.

With 20 per cent of Canadians struggling to breathe as a result of lung disease, lung health should be top of mind for all Canadians.

“We have been helping Canadians breathe for well over 100 years, but we know our job is not done,” he adds.

Yet, despite the work that still lies ahead, Canadian respiratory research funded by The Lung Association has added valuable knowledge to the global field and air back into Canadians’ lungs. This Lung Month, to celebrate the impact of research, The Lung Association will launch a research report microsite, capturing the highlights from the past five years.

“We are extremely thankful to all of our donors who make lung research possible and to our world-class researchers who have the expertise, skill and patience to carry out the research that they do. This report is a true testament to both of these groups. We hope that it will inspire all Canadians to make lung health a priority.”
