Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Lung Association is proud to announce the launch of a new competition that gives emerging clinician scientists an opportunity to focus on their research. The new CIHR-ICRH/AZ Canada/ CLA Emerging Clinician Scientist Award has been made possible through a partnership between Canadian Lung Association (CLA), CIHR-Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) and AstraZeneca Canada (AZ Canada).
“This is an exciting announcement for the Canadian research community. This unique award is a great example of a true partnership that will benefit Canadian research, and ultimately, Canadians. We are thrilled to work with such impressive and dedicated partners on this award,” says the Canadian Lung Association president and CEO, Terry Dean. “This gives us an opportunity to address a significant capacity gap in respiratory research and continue to stake our place among global leaders in research, respiratory health and medicine.”
The grant applications are open to professionals in a number of clinical settings, such as Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine-Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Dental Sciences, PhD-Respiratory Therapist, PhD-Registered Nurse, PhD-Physiotherapist and PhD-Occupational Therapist or equivalent. This is open to researchers in the area of chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, cough, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency, Interstitial Lung Disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

This award is an establishment grant program for clinician-investigators, who are in the first five (5) years of their first faculty appointment (or first academic appointment by September 1, 2019) and will provide them with 50 per cent protected research time.
“We must continue to provide fertile ground for research in Canada and this is one way we can do that.”
The award is one of several grants available through the Canadian Lung Association.
