Ottawa, ON – Make this January life-changing. For more than thirty years, the National Non-smoking Week has provided Canadians with an opportunity to educate themselves about the dangers of smoking and encouragement and resources to quit. This January, honoring this year’s theme Tobacco Free for Life ...Choose Now!, The Lung Association wants to help you breathe easier and help you quit smoking.
Smoking takes your breath away and can cause a host of serious lung diseases. This week gives everyone an opportunity to take their breath back and begin a healthier chapter of their lives. The Lung Association encourages people who want to start their quit journey to start with reaching out for support.
Even light smoking can cause lung damage because the effects add up over time. The single best thing you can do for your health is to quit smoking. And the improvements start almost immediately. As soon as you stop smoking, your body begins to cleanse itself of tobacco poisons.
Every journey begins with a first step. Below are resources you can use to increase your chances of successful cessation.
• Increase your chances of quitting and staying quit by getting support from a health-care professional or a smoking cessation counselor.
• Get individual counseling by phone or in person with a health-care professional.
• Join a support group. Research shows that people in quit-smoking support groups are more likely to quit.
• Contact your local Lung Association to find support in your area.
