Ottawa, ON – The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Medical Foundation has provided The Lung Association's Breathing as One Campaign with a $25,000 donation to support respiratory research.
The Lung Association will use the funds to further the work of Dr. Bernard Thébaud, who is affiliated with The Ottawa Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Thébaud’s research into a rare condition called surfactant protein deficiency has the potential to save the lives of babies worldwide while also leading to discoveries for other incurable diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
“I would like to thank the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa Medical Foundation for their generous donation,” said Debra Lynkowski, President and CEO of the Canadian Lung Association. “With
the support of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, we can begin to bridge the gap between the growing burden of lung disease and the lack of funding available for respiratory research.”

Ottawa Medical Foundation. “We believe that by investing in world-class research like Dr. Thébaud’s, we are supporting the discovery of new treatments and cures that will make for
healthier communities.”
Respiratory research receives less than five per cent of federal funds invested in medical research. To address this funding gap, The Lung Association recently launched the Breathing as
One Campaign for Lung Research. The campaign aims to advance a bold national strategy that will strengthen lung research in Canada by leveraging funding through greater collaboration amongst researchers, building capacity through mentorship and training, and converting research into concrete guidelines, practices, treatment, program designs, and policy.
