Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Lung Association is honoured to announce that Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, has confirmed her viceregal patronage.
“We have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Rideau Hall and all those who held the Governor General’s post for more than a century,” says Terry Dean, president and CEO. “We are happy to know that this relationship is continuing.”
The relationship between The Canadian Lung Association and governors general dates back to 1900 when one of the early predecessors, the Earl of Minto, helped to found the Canadian Tuberculosis Association (as The Canadian Lung Association was originally known) in a meeting with physicians and others from the anti-tuberculosis community at Rideau Hall. It was this meeting that gave the needed push to the fight against tuberculosis that would take place during the decades that followed.
Throughout the last century, The Association has helped Canadians breathe better by advocating for changes in our communities, providing health education and funding life-giving research.
“As an evidence-based organization, we are especially grateful for the extended support of someone like Ms. Payette,” Dean adds, referring to the scientific background that Her Excellency brings to the office at Rideau Hall.
The Governor General’s rich career includes being an astronaut, an engineer, a scientific broadcaster as well as a corporate director. Viceregal patronage is offered to organizations that contribute to society and are seen as worthy causes, showcasing excellence.
