Prevention

You can’t prevent having an Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency because it is from your genes (inherited). The most common faulty gene that can cause AAT deficiency is called PiZ. If you inherit two PiZ genes (one from each parent), you'll have Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. However, you may never develop the diseases related to Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

There are things you can do to help delay getting the lung disease (COPD) that is related to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. The most important step is to never smoke or quit smoking.
The Lung Association has many programs and resources to help you quit smoking. Learn more about the Lung Association’s resources on helping you quit and stay quit

You should also try to avoid secondhand smoke and other air pollution.

Make sure your living and working spaces don’t have anything that may irritate your lungs. For example, avoid places with dust, fumes and other toxic substances that you may inhale.
